Smith and Turner Out, Nepotism In.

Smith and Turner Out, Nepotism In.

Acee reporting today Norv and AJ WILL be fired at the end of season and Jimmy Raye will take over as GM with.......John Spanos!

Dean even screws up firing people! If you are going to fire someone, just come out and say, stop with these rampant media reports, taking away the focus of the team.

If report is true...Chargers need to bring in a big name coach to work with these two amateurs.

Honk! Are you advocating for Deano to keep Norval and A.J. on for one more year? ;) =P

Re: Smith and Turner Out, Nepotism In.

Much like the laid-back, semi-podunk nature of the city, the Spanos have done nothing but remained conservative yet again.  Unless Raye has been in AJ's shadow railing against every one of his decisions, then this is continuity again.  Sad.

Hopefully I'm wrong.  But patterns are patterns, and Dean doesn't see his as a loser's mentality... which it is.

The best thing out of all of this is that the coaching search is now front and center.  Months to do your homework.

Still, I feel it will be a whimper of a coaching decision.  Nothing this organization does seems to inspire much brilliance.

The sad part is that people will see this as a great move instead of a move that happened wayyyyy too late.  2-3 years too late.  Good riddance.

Raye has been heard disagreeing with some of AJ's picks, most notably his pick of Busted Davis.... If this is true, I am all for it, because it tells me he doesnt have the same mindset and " culture" of AJ.....

Now all we need to do is get a coach...If it is going to be a former HC, it MUST be Dungy, Gruden, Cohwer...

Or we go the fresh face route, with Shaw, Kelly, or someone like that....

I'll believe it when I see it.

Acee is a two faced blogger and I dont trust either face.

Dean Spanos:

Regarding recent reports about the status of General Manager A.J. Smith and Head Coach Norv Turner:

“There is only one person in this organization who will make those decisions and that’s me, and I haven’t shared my thoughts with anyone. I will make my evaluations at the end of the season. Anything coming out now – from sources or otherwise – is pure speculation.”

Of course he's saying this and he's lying! Acee is getting this info from people deep within the organization and if you ask me, I honestly believe he is getting it from John Spanos. John has the most to gain and the most to gain from a good relationship from Acee. During Acee's interview on 1090am today, Acee repeatedly gave John Spanos glowing reviews...Wonder why? Doesn't take a genius...HA!

If the rumor is true and they promote from within, what makes anyone here believe that they'll go outside to hire a new HC?

If this is really I think they end up with promoting from within when it comes to the new HC also.  Only outsider I see coming in would likely be a new OC cause sure as heck don't believe that they'll stay with Hal Hunter as the OC.

It's the only reason why I think Norv is still sporting a Chargers coach uniform.

Hope you're right. I just dont like Acee.

It is funny to me that in the midst of a terrible losing streak Dean cant say one word. This leak comes out and Dean fires off a statement. THAT got him motivated?

Dude is a putz.

RE: Smith and Turner Out, Nepotism In.

There is no doubt, what so ever that Dean Spanos is dysfunctional. NONE!

He doesn't even understand that sports is entertainment and as an owner he could generate a lot of fan interest if he just spoke to the fans with some enthusiasm and hired a head coach who was fiery. That's something fans want to see....someone who is as passionate as they are about winning. Hearing nothing from Dean and having to watch Norv on the sidelines, is about as bad as a PR job an owner can pull, without purposefully trying to sabotage yourself. He just doesn't get it....the man is lost! But we can only hope that John Spanos, who seems to be taking over the organization, has more on the ball, which I believe he does.

That is a great point and I'm not sure I have read it said like that. Your 100% correct.

This is nothing new. Acee commonly reports conjecture as if they are facts.

I read that part about Buster Davis, how Raye wanted David Harris. If only that had happened...

I would be excited about Raye at GM and Shaw at HC. The rest of the possible head coaches you mentioned are unappealing to me.

If the report is true, and, why not?  Then, the answer to your question is simple.  The reason Dean is supposedly cutting AJ is because of all of us, the Charger fan base.  Therefore, he realizes that he must make an impact with the coaching hire.  Raye will be a graet GM and I have no doubts he will find a really good HC: like Gruden or Reid.

Well everybody should be happy now. John Spanos was always going to take over so this isn't a surprise at all, its been in the works for years.

Who will be the new coach? I don't like any of the options out there right now...we missed our chance with Fisher and he was the only legit one out there.

Honk, the ONLY thing I care about in a coach is that he knows what wins in this league, and then doesn't take any crap from the people in his way of getting it.  And that is a big, athletic, P-H-Y-S-I-C-A-L team on the inside, and then adding on out from there.

Not, and sorry if this offends all of you decades long Charger fans, the typical, "traditional" Charger type teams of glitzy, shiny "toys" on the perimeter who handle the ball all the time, with a pussy-laden interior that always wilts at the turn of the year.

In other words, a coach who will change into something TRULY new the heart, soul, mentality, philosophy... everything... of what has been a lost franchise since its inception.

Like someone else in this thread mentioned, this team's recent mindset of "continuity" will only be its bane if it remains its future mindset.

And if they indeed have the understanding of this TRUTH of which I have just spoken, and beyond that the ability to employ it in finding their new leaders, then I don't care if those guys sit motionless in rocking chairs during every game.  All that matters is their understanding of what wins.

Bolts Notebook: Changes and Challenges

Who'll be the next head coach in San Diego? Which player should the Chargers target in free agency? And, oh yeah, what about this week's game in Pittsburgh? Here is a run-down in this week's Bolts Notebook. Read More...

The news on Turner is hardly news. The situation is Smith is more unexpected, but there is no need to count that egg until it is hatched. As for the coaching situation, bring in Russ Grimm. Hopefully, he can get John Pagano to stay on board. If not, go pilfer Raheem Morris from Washington and tab him as defensive coordinator.

so Jimmy Raye is better than AJ because he wanted Harris over Buster 5 years ago?

sounds logical
