ESPN reporting both AJ and Norv getting the boot

ESPN reporting both AJ and Norv getting the boot

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday morning that San Diego general manager A.J. Smith and Norv Turner’s futures are likely connected.

Thus, there very well could be wholesale changes after the season. Both men were given a reprieve last year. That likely won’t happen this year, barring a major turnaround.

Mortensen reported a likely replacement for Smith would be San Diego director of player personnel Jimmy Raye. Then, Mortensen reported, college scouting director John Spanos likely would become the director of player personnel.

These moves all sound plausible as it appears major change is on the horizon in San Diego.

--Can't say I'm disappointing as both men have turned out to be complete failures

We can only hope Mort is right and Raye is better than AJ.
CHUCKIE, come to San Diego, the finest city in America, and lead us to the Super Bowl! If you then become an intolerable bully, I'll be okay with that.

Yes, this is likely going to happen. But it's more speculation then fact. I can guarantee you there isn't a member of the Spanos family (those who would know) leaking this info to Mort.

If this is true, and Raye is made the GM, I will give him an opportunity to prove himself...but I see this decision to stay in house, as another cheap cost cutting move by Dean, who doesn't want to open his wallet to bring in an experienced GM. I will reserve any further comment or judgment until the hammer hits the nail.

I hope he's wrong as it regards to the GM. It sounds like another lazy Spanos employment of the "next man up" theory.

If we're going to fire AJ we need to do the job right and have a complete culture overhaul.

I wouldn't mind Raye as long as he doesn't have the ego of AJ.  We have to remember that scoutingwise, we haven't been bad if you take into account all of the talent that AJ has allowed to walk in FA.  AJ killed this team by keeping Norv for too long and letting people like VJack and Turner get away.  I'd be okay with Raye as long as we got a solid coach like Shaw to come in and restore a level of mental toughness that our Bolts are sorely lacking

I know nothing about JR-III, except he's been here long enough for AJ way of thinking to rub off on him.   I want a guy who has been around winning, a guy with no predetermined loyalties who is willing to fire the people who deserve to be fired and put in guys who is looking for what he is looking for in players.

If we're gonna do a culture change do it right, none of this half ass stuff.

My sentiments precisely. The egomaniacal nature of AJ Smith does not play well with others, especially those who are predisposed to the same nature. He brings constant clash with somebody. While this trait, by itself, is not necessarily a bad (everything in moderation) thing, it taints EVERY relationship the man has. There is no in-between with AJ: you are either for him or against him. When EVERYONE is forced to pick sides, only 'Yes' men are left standing. If the Lord of No Rings is shown the door, our beloved Chargers will have a chance to rebuild.

This.

AJ demanded that he work in an environment where no one challenges him. He got what he wanted. He failed to produce acceptable results.

Also agree with Syx that our chances of winning increase if we don't promote from within.

I am opposed to hiring Raye for GM. The entire mgmt team needs to be made over with a new staff. Time to turn the page and move on. I believe you will be able to lure in one of the big time coaches if you let them be part of the draft and FA process. It is a big bargaining chip to woo a big time impactful coach.

Stay away from Raye!

I have the utmost faith that Dean will screw it up again. He might as well bring Bobby Beathard back and re-hire Kevin Gilbride.

That's awesome!

But how do your interpersonal skills affect the price of beer in San Diego? Or relate to AJ Smith's attitude as GM?

I think this is great news potentially.  So are you saying you'd rather keep AJ or have John Spanos takeover?  Jimmy Raye needs no introduction to our guys (ie extending Liuget or Butler's contract immediately) nor would he turn off any potential coach we're trying to court.  The fact that there's a chance AJ gets fired is just great news for Chargers fans and this franchise

Re: ESPN reporting both AJ and Norv getting the boot

I will heartily agree that any maneuver that displaces the current regime sounds appealing to me. As for the prospects of Jimmy Raye & John Spanos, well there's just not enough information to form a valid opinion. There was an NC Times piece on Raye not too long ago that painted a very favorable picture. And I'm unsure if was just to satisfy the Rooney Rule, but evidently the Bears thought enough of him to bring him in for a GM interview. At the very least I like the fact that he's a former player (albeit a bench scrub) who worked his way up as a scout. He's also the son of an offensive coordinator. I do worry about John Spanos as the Director of Personnel, not so much from the much ballyhooed nepotism aspect, but more from the fact that he lacks any experience as a former player at at least a collegiate level. It could also be argued that both Raye and Jr Spanos are part of the problematic system that has brought the talent level to where it exists today.

Re: ESPN reporting both AJ and Norv getting the boot

I wouldnt mind AJ staying as long as a good head coach comes in. AJ really screwed up with the Buster Davis and Larry English picks but I like what Ive seen out of Butler, Liuget and Reyes and I think Mathews could be a damn good back if he actually gets some blocking in front of him. Every GM needs a good coach to step up, know what he wants and develop those players. Norv looks clueless with that.

Then again, AJ will probably want to hire another awesome coordinator that proved to be a failure at head coach already, like Mike Nolan. So I am all good with AJ leaving.

Which coach with ANY real ability (insert opportunity to turn this franchise around here) is going to WANT to come to work for the Lord of No Rings? I'm just curious, brother.banghead

Well I have come to the conclusion that the Chargers are throwing these games to get rid of NT and AJ.  noidea  Sounds better to me than just plain a$$ sucking !!

RE: ESPN reporting both AJ and Norv getting the boot

If you "throw" a game in the NFL you don't even stay close IMO. Not if you're the Chargers against the Ravens and the Bengals, two superior teams. I think the team is trying hard to win. I think the real answer is that at least offensively we plain a$$ suck right now. As bad as that has been, I'd rather have that then have players who make a conscious decision not to play for a coach or GM. Sometimes there are factors that creep in and may effect performance, but that's different then throwing a game.

There should be a lot more for these guys to play for than A.J. and Norv. Granted as an East Coaster I don't get to see them every week, but from what I have seen, I haven't seen a lack of effort. Just a lack of talent.
