Stanford Routt

Stanford Routt

Chiefs just cut him.

He would be owed $1.8 million for the remainder of this year if a team signs him and he's in Year 1 of a 3-year, 19.6 million contract.  Would anyone be open to signing him? I would be open to bringing him in for the final stretch to see how he fits in Pagano's defense.  If he doesn't work out, we could cut him and not owe him anything further beyond the 1.8 million.  If he does work out, we would at least have a ready replacement for Cason.

Re: Stanford Routt

No thanks.  He is regularly THE MOST penalized player in the entire league (offense or defense) and gets burned the majority of the time.  Oakland talked about targeting him in their most recent game, and they should know considering they let him go.

Not saying we have much better here, but I do think he would only be the third best corner on the team if he signed today...and that's not saying much

Yeah, I just saw on BSPN...although I'm not much for others cast offs, he's a low risk good reward signing....so I'd be open to it.

I agree, WC.  I get the above poster's concerns, and they are valid concerns.  That's why I would spend 1.8 mil to see if his struggles continue here.  I mean what do we have to lose?  We are going to be signing a CB and/or drafting one next year.  If Routt doesn't work out over the next 8 games, we're right back at Square One.  I know this is exactly how we got stuck with Gaither last year, but at least Routt isn't as injury prone and has never had his effort questioned like Gaither so there aren't quite as many red flags there.

Agree, though do the Lions get a shot first?  I would think they'd snap him up in a heartbeat.

I'd bet on Oakland, or Tampa Bay.

If he gets through waivers I'd give him a shot for sure, but claim him...no.  He's an upgrade over Carr, Gilchrist and probably Cason.

If he's an upgrade over our #2 corners, why wouldn't we pay 1.8 million for 8 games for him?

Well its not a huge upgrade, but salary cap reasons come to mind.  We entered the season with about $3M available, we've signed a few guys since then and we got little or no relief from releasing Kaeding.  We'd be up against it if we claimed him, and his contract elevates next year which is a bad thing if he ends up sucking.

As far as next year goes, we could cut him at the end of the year without any cap ramifications towards next year.

Not sure thats true, we inherit the contract if we claim him off waivers.

Put me in the camp of no thanks.  I did not think much of him when he played for Oakland and they let him go.  Now he has played poorly for KC and I think he has had some injury problems.   Now one thing I noticed is that our young hopefull S Wright was back playing special teams last week.  Another 2 weeks or so he might be back to 100 percent and could replace  Cason " the man who tackles like Cromartie but can't cover anybody"!

RE: Stanford Routt

He was basically playing on a one-year deal in KC with a team option for the final two years.

So you're telling me he signed a 3 year deal with no guaranteed money in the final 2 years?  Seems unlikely.

It can seem whatever you want it to seem.  Facts are facts.

RE: Stanford Routt

We most definitely have to consider it.  We'll obviously be looking for a CB this next offseason - and AJ has not been good drafting this position.  I've not really watched this kid this year.  Could he start here?  Who do you cut to make room for him?  Would he immediately replace Cason - and do you keep Gilchrist and Wright?
