Yea that play at the end was very questionable and the defense needs to step up... I still think this team is one of the top 2 or 3 in the NFC and I would be surprised if we didnt make a deep run in the playoffs.

RE: New Orleans Saints season long thread

I just don't know what to think after this game. Our defense was atrocious (not surprising) but why do I feel like everyone is flat out ignoring what we did tonight? Brees shredded GB for 419 yards & 3 TD's. This is how I like to look at it:

The Packers had homefield advantage.
The Packers had that mystique Super Bowl banner celebration
The Packers had 0 injuries
The Packers had 0 turnovers.
The Packers had 0 dropped passes.
The Packers had 0 crucial penalties
The Packers had a kick return for a touchdown by a rookie who, for some freakishly strange reason, brought a kick from 8 yards deep which he had no signs of any blockers because he ran into a parade of white jerseys, yet miraculously spun away and took it to the house. Cobb has some serious balls

The Saints were only 1/5 in the redzone
The Saints missed tackle after tackle after tackle
The Saints didn't have 1 measly turnover
The Saints had multiple drops
The Saints were without key starters

After all that, we somehow were 1 yard away from tying the game. I just don't know what to make of this game.

Oh yea, Aaron Rodgers is an arrogant prick and Woodson's @$$ shoulda been ejected after landing that upper-cut on Thomas. That's the rules of the game: you throw a punch and you're outta here. Cheap bastard

Oh, stop whining. Both teams had their "hot" moments. That's football.

As far as your rationalization of the loss is concerned, that final drive should 1) never have started on the 20-yard line to begin with seeing as how Bush's knee was down at the 1-yard line on the punt, and 2) the pass interference call on AJ Hawk at the end was a phantom call. The replay showed that Hawk deflected the pass before the defender was even touched, but the back judge who threw the flag didn't have a clear line of vision, and thus did not see that. Judgment calls like that aren't reviewable anyway.

There was no rationalization..that's how the game went. I don't see where you think I'm making excuses. Do you not see how I pointed out how good Green Bay played compared to how we played AND we still almost won even though Green Bay played a near perfect game. I feel better about the Saints after this season opener more than I did after last year's season opener..and we won that game. Obviously! you misunderstood where I was coming from because I was implying how impressive it was to overcome all of that and somehow still have a shot to win the game against a team like Green Bay. I'm excited for this season. I don't think this game serves as an example of how our season goes because I think we will see these guys again deep in the playoffs.

Whining? Is you say so...noidea

RE: New Orleans Saints season long thread

I really wanted to see how strong our run game could of been had we not been playing catch up from the get-go. We lost because Green Bay's offense could execute better then we could. Plain and simple. Both defenses played crappy. I knew our's was gonna be shaky but you know Green Bay is not happy about Brees tearing them up like the way he did. I'm so happy to see that Drew Brees again..

And good God do we need to learn how to tackle. That was awful last night

Also, resigning Sharper might be considered after watching Harper completely forget how to play football. Something needs to happen there because it seems teams are starting to prepare game plans specifically around Harper.

No, I understood fine. New Orleans has a good team, but they wouldn't have even been in position for that "one yard away" scenario had the officials actually marked the ball correctly at the 1-yard line instead of ruling it a touchback. Additionally the phantom pass interference call on Hawk gave New Orleans life that it otherwise would not have had.

Phantom calls.. what about on the kuhn touchdown when Sean Rodgers was literally grabbed by his jersey and pulled to the ground..or how about how Woodson doesn't get ejected after throwing 2 punches to the gut.. overall no excuses the defense sucked it up bad..

"Well if Colston wouldn't have fumbled, if the facemask would have been called on a GB touchdown to bring it back, and if Woodson had been ejected then I bet we would have won."

C'mon man, don't sit there and play that game....if you want to, I'll have you know the refs owed us those two calls.

Yea, try! I'm sick of watching our DB's play WR's 8 yards off the line. And Robinson on Jennings..are you kidding me Gregg Williams?? Rodgers was just laughing thinking "Are they really doing this?"

BUT on a good note..how bout Sproles!! Reggie who? lol

RE: New Orleans Saints season long thread

Look, it's not a big deal to me. I understand that officiating gaffes happen a lot in football, and they usually happen to both teams. Like you said, there were some calls (or non-calls) against New Orleans as well. All I'm referring to in specific is the last drive. The calls (or non-calls) on the last one or two drives of a football game are more heavily scrutinized and usually carry more weight because the game often hangs in the balance at that point.

The refs blew a lot of plays last night, but none more important (in my opinion, at least) than the last punt and the PI. Even with that, I'm not as concerned with the refs as I'm concerned with the defense playing lax at times.

Re: New Orleans Saints season long thread

If the Saints can put up that many points in a bad game, imagine what they will do in a good game!! I hope no one is jumping off the band wagon yet. I believe that the Saints are gonna hurt some peoples feelings!!!!  Defense needs to do some tackling drills and refresh their memory on how to do it!!!!  Geaux Saints!!!!

Neither team will see another offense as good as they were against each other last night.

I dont know if its me but greg williams is overrated as a defensive coordinator. If it wasnt for our offense we will be in serious trouble b/c we cant stop nobody. We end & start the season giving up over 40+ points. Our db"s need to get aggressive. As for G. Williams why would you play zone & let rogers pick us apart.

Haha suck it Aints. Glad to see the Pack back on track but the D worries me some right now. Love seeing the excuses from the aints fans. Just glad the pack was able to win after those two blown calls late that the aints always seem to get.

RE: New Orleans Saints season long thread

Oh BigUgly...what you call excuses are actually fans discussing the performance of their team. That's the point of being a fan you know. Please don't bring up blown calls because both teams got their own and all played a big role in the outcome of the game. I'm still having trouble understanding how a very very small selection of people consider AJ Hawk molesting Sproles not pass interference. To be honest with you, it was a good job by Hawk interfering because that was a for sure touchdown.

coolldbck, you are not the only that thinks that, trust me. He had an awful gameplan, but then you have to think..it's the Packers. There were some plays when we had the perfect coverage, but Rodgers just threw those perfect balls to the back shoulder and there is literally nothing you can as a defender to defend that. Also, putting Patrick Robinson on Greg Jennings? Really? But the biggest letdown on defense was the interior line, imo. I think Shaun Rogers had the worst game of everyone, even more so than Harper. The 3rd & goal that Kuhn rushed in was just absolutely awful. Rogers just got thrown around like a rag-doll somehow. Not once did you see an Abreyu Franklin/Shaun Rogers combination. It was either one of them and Ellis, who was too undersized all night. The bad play of the line led to Vilma just getting shutdown. Did anyone else see Vilma on that field because I sure as hell didn't

But, like I've been trying to say, there are actually some positives one can get from this game:

-Sproles is going to be huge for us this year. He had an amazing night in so many different aspects of that game. We finally have a return game, and he worked really well coming out of the backfield. Sproles and Brees already have great timing, and it'll only get better

-Brees throwing for 419 yards and 3 touchdowns and not one interception against the #1 most difficult defense for QB's to face. His ball security was fantastic; taking sacks instead of just helplessly throwing it. He threw it 49 times and didn't have a pick...that's just good news for us.

-Not many people are mentioning John Kasay coming in and having a good game hitting two field goals, one being 38 yards. Anything under 40 yards, and Hartley might miss it, but over 40 yards and he will drill it. So, Kasay coming in a providing a consistent kicking game is great news (see last year vs Atlanta)

-Devery Henderson finally came back out to play! He had over 100 yards recieving and a touchdown. He also did a great job of breaking up a couple picks which were poor throws from Brees.

-Remember, we didn't have Lance Moore or Will Smith. I'm not saying we would have won if they were playing, but Moore does soo much for our offense now. We went 1/5 in the redzone..know why? No Lance Moore lining up in the slot. That's where he is most effective. Will Smith had a great preseason, and we were just switching out McBride, Charleston, and Gallette all game which really wasn't too effective. We need Will Smith back.

-Zach Streif actually played a lot better than people expected. This was his first start and he was just thrown into the lion's den with Clay Matthews, and he did well. He won't face a more intense pass rusher than Matthews so if he can hold his own there ,for the most part, like he did then I'm feeling good about our O-Line.
