MAC Expansion

MAC Expansion

As I'm sure most of you know by now, Fresno State lost to SJSU today, 62-52.  This means that if NIU beats BGSU in the MAC Championship game Friday, the Huskies will most certainly represent the MAC for the second straight year in a BCS bowl game.  This, of course, is a huge windfall for conference members.

Having said that, the MAC is sitting at 13 football members, including UMass for football only.

What we know - James Madison University leadership has approved a move from the Football Championship Subdivision to FBS.  Sticking point, JMU must be invited by an FBS conference.  So far, the Sun Belt has indicated keen interest in adding JMU, but JMU wants a strong academic fit that the SBC does not provide.  JMU is waiting to here from the MAC, but, I'm told JMU does not have the needed votes from the MAC to get an invite.

Also, JMU wants an all-sports invite.  The MAC (my speculation), will not consider JMU until and unless UMass commits for all sports.  Another option for the MAC would be Army for football-only.  I believe this is the MAC's top choice right now.  The other option is Illinois State, although the Redbirds are not ready to move up yet.  NIU has indicated an interest in having an in-state rival so it's conceivable NIU (and a MAC West block) could be lobbying for ISU instead of JMU.

Only time will tell how this all shakes out, but one thing is for sure, MAC football is a hot commodity right now!

FIRE UP CHIPS! biggrin

Re: MAC Expansion

The best deal would be to give UMASS an ultimatum.  Either you join for all sports or we will have to drop your football team to add two new full time members.  One sport memberships only work in the non-glamour sports:  hockey, tennis, etc.

Basketball is devisive:  See the Big East.

If UMASS wants the benefit of being a football member, they will have to do more than just play a couple of hoops games per year against MAC opponents.

Drop it on em.  JMU is joining full time.  You must also join full time or we will replace you with another east coast program.  There are plenty of up and coming programs looking to get a toe hold in a D1 league.  UMASS is in a weak bargaining position now.  They have contracted to expand football facilities.  The money has been spent.  Now is the time to press them.

As far as Illinois State... meh.   Does this mean that we have to give Ball State an in-state league rival as well?  How about Indiana State?

Appreciate the new topic BW.  Expansion always gets our juices flowing!

Actually, the league needs to jump from 13 to 16 members.  So, bring in ISU, JMU and Army.

Eastern Illinois could be the in-state rival for NIU.

IDAHO!!! Why not bring in the UofI Vandals? I know the distance is a little more, but Idaho brings great academics, similar CFB and basketball programs. And, you would only have to fly out to Moscow once every two years. Distance isn't as great as it used to be with modern transportation.

Go Vandals

Once every two years, per sport.  Every year for hoops.  Not sure Idaho could afford the frequent trips east.  For them, every other week in football.  Almost every week in hoops.

My preferred team would be ndsu they would really help the mac but again travel woukd be quite difficult. For the idaho poster it appears there are rumors of idaho linking with the sbc.

I'm not sure what the MAC is hoping to accomplish by continuing to offer football-only memberships to schools with lousy football programs. noidea

Well like temple they were banking on hoops comming not sure how or why. I say give mass the ultimatum bring hoops.next yr or take football somewhere else. Ridiculous seeing mac teams trounce umass weekly it does nothing to help our prestige and only adds another whipping school like emu and well wmu!
