Re: Rosenthal callup?

I cannot offer any other confirmation than you presented with the Rains' tweet.  I suspect it is true because I doubt if Rains would put it out without some legitimate source to back it up.

It is certainly an interesting move.  The bullpen is a mess and, apparently, there isn't a move (trade) that Mo feels like he can make to solve the issue so Rosenthal is called to the show.  This team needs a veteran presence in the bullpen but Fuentes may be that person.

While not on topic, I want to say that the pitch selection to Rolen last night was awful.  A player with a severe shoulder issue should not get a pitch on the outside which he can just put bat on ball and shoot it into RF.  Awful.

I like the tweet from Trevor's brother Tanner.  I suspect that everybody has all the proof they need.   Trevor Rosenthal has made it to the show.

To me, it seems to be about timing. Rosenthal is available today while trades take time. If a veteran was acquired tomorrow or next week, Rosenthal (or another pitcher) could easily be sent down.

And having even a little time to see what Rosenthal can do at the big league level will help Mo have a clearer picture of what he does and doesn't need to do at the trade deadline.

So, 40 man move will be?  Garcia to 60 day DL?

That would be easiest - if they don't think he will be ready until after the first week in August.

Re: Rosenthal callup?

My only concern here that Rosenthal may not know from day one how to prepare himself properly to pitch in relief.    I.e. how to warm up quickly, mindset, etc.   Things that even more mature pitchers often need an adjustment period in order to pitch out of the bullpen.

Does Seigrest now get another shot in Springfield after a good outing in Palm Beach?

Re: Rosenthal callup?

Excited to see what we have in Rosenthal. Longterm, if we can hit on two of Kelly, Rosenthal, and Miller I think we are in good shape from both a rotation strength perspective as well as a team budget standpoint regardless of what other promising pitchers we have on the farm. We might already be halfway there, but obviously the sample size is still small on Kelly even though he has been impressive.

Then we just have to hope we don't trade the best one of the group before he fully develops or banking on the third one to work out (see: Chris Perez, Jason Motte for a reasonable example even though it is hard to complain too much based on Motte in the playoffs alone)

Possible, but could be just as likely that someone gets bumped down from Memphis.

Re: Rosenthal callup?

I generally agree with Carioca's concerns about starting and relieving but I am confident that the coaches and other players that have gone through that process can be very helpful  Wainwirght comes to mind as one that accomplished it with some degree of ease and will likely be helpful to Rosenthal.

The Cardinals need to at least replace Cleto and Marte.  I am guessing that Cleto is going back to Memphis for Rosenthal and that if Fuentes is added, then either Marte or Rosenthal is sent back down.

I have thought all year that the Cardinals need a veteran influence in the pen and Fuentes would solve that if the club can get him right.  I am sure the trade market price is very high right now and I agree with the comment that trying one of the team's plus prospects is better than making a costly trade.

P.S. Cleto was optioned to Memphis but the 40 man roster move is still pending.

Garcia move to 60-day now officially confirmed, as is Rosenthal promotion (update: and Cleto demotion).

RE: Rosenthal callup

Aside from the obvious of seeing the Cardinals middle relief core cost this team game after game, I wonder if Rosenthal's recall has other meaning?

Clearly, Ropsenthal has been called up to help the bullpen, at least until which time the Cardinals snag some help via trade.  I have started to ponder whether the trade bait for such an acquisition might be Joe Kelly.

I said in another thread that if the Cardinals see Joe Kelly as a future reliever, rather than a starter, it would make sense to move him for a bonafide starter, right?   I could see a scenario where the Cardinals acquire a new starter by trading Kelly, move Lynn to the bullpen for the balance of the year, if necessary, and move Rosenthal and the new acquisition into the rotation.

Re: Rosenthal callup

I'd like to have seen Butler get a chance for a middle relief role as that has been publicly/loudly proclaimed as a need.

But I'm excited for Trevor, too.  Seems like most/all feel he's earned it.

This may provide a further impetus for Shelby (less than a year younger) as he was once considered the more polished/developed pitcher... assuming Trevor enjoys a significant level of success during this audition.

This might be the case.
