Bear

Bear

My brother and I were working in the woods this afternoon and at about 5:15 we shut the tractor off and heard something coming through.  We look up on the hill and about 75 yards way is 2 bears.  The first I got a good view of and it was a big one, probably 300 lbs.  They disappears on top the hill, but I could still hear them for a solid 2 minutes.  I kinda surprised they came up on us with that much noise.

RE: Bear

I would love to see a September-Feb bear season with bait allowed for 1 year.

Re: Bear

My son was with me on the first day of gun season, and he got to see his first wild bear.  It came to about 20 yards away before I stood up.  I did not want it to get too close and be surprised by us.  It just turned and trotted back the way it came.  We hunted about 3 miles on the wrong side of the open/closed season line, or I may have had my first bear.

I don't have enough bear experience to judge how big it was, but it definitely was not a "Kimble bear".

Re: Bear

a guy we hunt with was in a stand just last week here in VA...a sow and 4, yes 4, cubs came in where he was feeding. he got nervous and started talking and they walked away. a short time later they came back so he started talking and they walked off again. a little later they came back a 3rd time...he started talking, they left, and he got down out of his stand and left because he got so nervous. he got some really cool video on his phone of their trips. just so you know, baiting of any form is illegal in VA...they were doing this to get what little food was there naturally.

another guy that hunts with us killed a 255 lb bear a few days later on the same property. there are way too many of them in the woods and they need to be thinned out.

Re: Bear

Does anyone think there are more bears around now than in the past?  In the past 20 years I may have only seen 1-2 bears in the wild.  I have now seen 3 in the past 3 months.  Tracks last week in our cow field, and another set of tracks with 2 cubs in the snow last winter.  And just this week my neighbor scared another one out of the woods and it ended up jumping across a row of wrapped hay bales putting claw makes in it.  Is it just right place right time or is there more bears now?

Yes I do.. and the dog hunters don't kill half what they tree. That's why the DNR set a bear season during deer rifle season in Preston co.

Re: Bear

The fact of the matter is there just aren't as many hunters as there used to be. Thanks to PETA, and a lot of anti-hunting orgs. that are brainwashing our children (and adults) with this rhetoric is part of the reason in the rise of these animals. They call it the Bambi syndrome. I hunted the last day of rifle season in Va. on doe day (Bland Co.) and did not hear a single shot all day.

I will agree with you to a point, but another reason we are losing hunters is the lack of hunting ground. I blame it on hunting shows. They are a half hour infomercial with a 10 minute clip of a dude shooting a 165" buck.
I have friends in Ohio that have lost ground they have hunted all their lives because farmers are leasing their ground for big money.
